UK issues first green growth "decoupling" indicators

The UK has issued a first set of indicators measuring the country's progress in efforts to decouple environmental impacts from rising economic growth. The indicators form part of a "sustainable production and consumption strategy" developed in 2003 (EED 26/09/03). A basket of eighteen metrics shows that emissions of some air pollutants and possibly river quality standards have been fully decoupled from GDP growth. But no decoupling has been seen in levels of water abstraction, in the decline in farmland bird populations or in carbon dioxide emissions from the mining sector.
