Commission launches stricter EU port controls
European transport commissioner Jacques Barrot proposed on Wednesday a new raft of measures to strengthen EU maritime safety rules. This is the third package of laws to emerge following the wreck of the oil tanker Erika in 1999 (EED 07/12/01).
