EU scientists back plan to market GM potato

The European food safety authority has given its backing for what could become the first genetically modified (GM) potato licensed in Europe for industrial use.  Efsa’s opinion is open for public comment until 9 December.  The European commission will then decide whether to recommend market approval.  Developed by BASF, the potato has an altered starch makeup and is designed for use in the paper, textiles, cosmetics and adhesives industries.  The opinion assesses possible risks should tubers find their way into food or feed.  See Efsa opinion.
