Climate a buzzword at EU energy conference
A major conference on EU energy policy ended in Brussels on Tuesday with a series of European commissioners highlighting the relationship between energy and climate policies. EU energy commissioner Andris Piebalgs argued environmental sustainability "should lie at the heart of global energy policies". Commission president Jose Manuel Barroso said the EU, as a net importer, should based its policy on renewables, energy efficiency, green technology and a single EU market. See Barroso speech, Piebalgs’ opening address and closing speech, plus speeches from trade commissioner Peter Mandelson, and foreign affairs commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner.
