UN plots high-level pre-Bali climate meeting
The UN could hold a high-level meeting in September to provide a political direction to international talks on combating climate change in Bali in December, the organisation's secretary general Ban Ki-moon has revealed. The Korean official told the Financial Times newspaper a world climate summit could follow in 2008 or 2009. Mr Ban said he would finalise the plans after a meeting of G8 leaders in Heiligendamm, Germany, in June, where German chancellor Angela Merkel hopes to accelerate talks to agree a global climate policy post-2012.
