UK's Brown confirms UK climate target
New British prime minister Gordon Brown has re-affirmed his support for a binding 60 per cent reduction in national carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. A new government programme unveiled by Mr Brown on Wednesday confirms support for a draft bill announced in March (EED 13/03/07). The new law would also introduce five-year carbon budgets and annual progress reports. It would also enable the extension of domestic greenhouse gas emission trading and require the government to report climate change adaptation measures every five years. See draft legislative programme (page 27).
