Portugal to begin low-energy light bulb handout
Portugal will next month begin distributing five free high-efficiency light bulbs to each of the poorest 13 per cent of households in the country, the economy ministry said last week. The initiative is part of a national plan aiming to phase out incandescent light bulbs by 2015 (EED 22/02/08). The ministry said the measure would save €12m in reduced electricity consumption and carbon allowance requirements. The scheme's estimated €6m cost will be met by electricity generator EDP, retail firms and a publicly financed innovation fund. See economy and innovation ministry.
