EU advisory body recommends airport CO2 goals

Long-term environmental targets are an "urgent priority" for airports, the European economic and social committee says in a new report published in the EU's official journal earlier this month. The committee says airports should be encouraged to set CO2 reduction targets covering all their operations. New airports should be designed to reduce aircraft fuel burn before take-off. The committee identifies several other ways in which airports could cut CO2 emissions, including requiring smoother descents and introducing differentiated aircraft landing and take-off fees and passenger parking charges.
