MEPs back wider access to foreign carbon credits

Member states should be able to buy more credits abroad to meet future EU carbon emission limits on non-industrial economic sectors such as transport, the European parliament's industry committee said this week.  In a vote on "effort-sharing" plans tabled by the European commission in January (EED 23/01/08), the committee said a proposed ceiling on buying foreign emission-reduction credits should be raised from 3 per cent to 4 per cent of 2005 emissions.  The parliament's environment committee will now consider the proposal, but its rapporteur opposes access to foreign credits (EED 10/09/08).  See European parliament industry committee.
