Portugal claims first commercial wave-power plant
Portugal inaugurated what it said was the world’s first commercial wave-power plant on Tuesday, off its northern coast at Aguçadoura. The 21-megawatt (MW) plant's developers, including power firm EDP, also announced the formation of a consortium to develop further projects. Antonio Sarmento of the Centro de Energia das Ondas told ENDS that Portugal could have an installed capacity of up to 1000MW within a decade. Long-term feed-in support tariffs have significantly boosted other renewables in Portugal, where the government wants to achieve 60 per cent renewably-generated electricity by 2020.
