EU confirms 2011 mercury export ban

EU competitiveness ministers confirmed on Thursday that mercury exports from the bloc will end by March 2011.  The ministers rubber-stamped a political deal on the ban reached earlier this year (EED 15/05/08).  Waste mercury from the chlorine and other industries will have to be safely stored.  But campaign group Healthcare without harm (HCWH) insisted the EU must also extend an imminent ban on some mercury-containing devices, claiming that its legislation lags behind that of the US (EED 03/10/07).   See releases from council of ministers and European commission, plus HCWH statement.
