Ireland to scale down its biofuel ambitions

The Irish government wants to slow down domestic efforts to increase biofuel consumption to reflect concerns about the environmental impact of energy crops.  In a consultation paper released on Monday, the government proposed a revised target of 4 per cent for 2010.  Last year, it said it would increase the share of biofuels in transport fuels to 5.75 per cent (EED 14/02/07).  Ireland remains committed to achieving a 10 per cent target by 2020 but only if biofuels comply with sustainability criteria being discussed at EU level, the government said.  See press release
