EU appliance eco-design talks to restart
The European parliament is set to begin its second-reading of the controversial draft energy-using products (EuP) directive after the council of ministers published its common position on the law on Tuesday. The ministerial stance was agreed politically in June (EED 11/06/04). The law would create a framework for the Commission to bring forward detailed EU-wide eco-design requirements for a host of product groups. At a first reading before the summer election MEPs called for third-party verification of compliance with future standards, better market surveillance, and flexibility for authorities to set tougher national standards.
