German soil protection commission launched
Germany's environment agency has created an expert commission to advise on future soil protection policies. The move was designed to raise public consciousness of the necessity for soil protection, it said in a statement. It will also increase pressure on the European Commission, which is due to publish a draft EU soil strategy by next June (EED 19/04/02). The agency has already gone public with a call for the EU strategy to usher in new stringent and legally binding European soil protection rules (EED 07/12/04). See press release.
