Environmentalists table tough logging law
Environmentalists have tabled a draft regulation to combat illegal logging outside the EU and are urging governments to adopt it in preference to a largely voluntary approach proposed by the European Commission in July. The shadow law, drafted for Greenpeace, WWF and Fern, would introduce tough import controls and make importing illegally-felled wood a crime. The Commission's strategy, in contrast, is based on persuading non-EU producer countries to set up timber licensing schemes (EED 21/07/04). Agriculture ministers will discuss the plans on Tuesday; several member states are thought to want stricter rules (EED 29/06/04). See NGOs' press release and proposed regulation.
