Further advance for EU protected sites network
Natura 2000, the EU's protected sites' network, has moved closer to completion with adoption by the European Commission of a fifth regional sites list. Over 5,000 Boreal region sites now officially join the network. The region covers one-fifth of EU land area, comprising Estonia, Latvia, most of Finland and Sweden and part of Lithuania. About 12% of the region's land area joins the network. Only two more regional lists - the Mediterranean and Pannonian (covering Hungary and parts of Slovakia and Czech Republic) - remain to be published. See press release and memo.
