Spanish contaminated sites law adopted

The Spanish government last Friday approved a decree aimed at curbing contamination on industrial sites. It creates a list of potentially contaminating industrial activities and obliges operators to register sites where such activities occur. Operators whose activities are judged to constitute a risk will have a statutory obligation to clean and restore the site within a set period. It is estimated that over 15,000 of the 26,500 identified sites of potential contamination will be affected. According to the environment ministry no specific EU legislation exists in this area. See Spanish environment ministry, and press release.
