Spain publishes damning environment report
An official report on Spain's environment presented on Tuesday by socialist environment minister Cristina Narbona warns of an "unsustainable" pattern of economic growth leading towards environmental crisis and criticises policy failures under the previous conservative administration. The "Environmental profile of Spain" describes economic growth as chaotic - largely concentrated on the coast, heavily dependent on road transport and bringing with it huge increases in waste production and water and energy use. Tourism, construction and transport are identified as sectors in which "a major effort" is needed to redirect development. See press release.
