Norwegians slash landfill emissions estimate
Norway's pollution control authority (SFT) has cut by "nearly half" its estimate of greenhouse gas emissions from waste landfills. Landfill methane emissions are also now reckoned to have fallen between 1990 and 2002, not remained stable as previously thought. Last year, SFT proposed a total ban on landfilling biodegradable waste, aimed primarily at slashing methane emissions (EED 11/06/04). "The environment ministry is still considering our proposal; but in light of the new figures, the reasons for the ban might not be as strong as we had thought", a spokesman told ENDS Europe DAILY.
