Portugal in solar thermal buildings drive

New Portuguese buildings or those undergoing renovation will have to feature solar thermal collectors under building regulations approved by the government on Thursday. The rules are designed to boost a 2001 solar hot water programme that has achieved under one-tenth of its target of 150,000m2 of collectors installed per year. They will apply to buildings above 1,000m2 floor area and permit substitution of solar thermal by other renewable energies of equal capacity. The Spanish government announced a similar solar buildings drive last year (EED 11/11/04). See Portuguese government and Portuguese solar industry association.
