Global renewable energy pledges quantified
Pledges to boost renewable energy made by governments and other stakeholders at last June's Renewables 2004 conference will avoid 1.2bn tonnes of carbon dioxide per year by 2015, the organisers have calculated. An analysis of the 197 actions and commitments projects an additional 163 megawatts electric of capacity by 2015, corresponding to investments of US$326bn (€250bn). Some 25% of the commitments are for implementation in Europe. The German government, which organised the conference and continues to champion renewable energy development world-wide, welcomed the finding. See analysis and German government press release.
