Norwegians move to ban Triclosan

Norway's national consumer council and food safety authority have called for a ban on products containing the antibacterial compound Triclosan. The calls follow findings by a scientific committee on food safety (VKM) that using Triclosan in cosmetics and other consumer products can promote the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. "The nature of the risk is such that...application of the precautionary principle is justified", the food agency said in a statement. The issue is to be raised with the EU "within the framework of EEA cooperation ". See press releases from food agency and consumer council.
