Scientists back detergent biodegradability test
EU scientists have helped fill a gap in the recently revised EU detergents regulation that could have led to some surfactants being excluded from the market from this October (EED 14/04/04). The regulation sets new standards for ultimate biodegradability of surfactants and specifies approved test methods. Following a request by European industry association Cesio, EU environmental science committee Scher has said that ISO 10708 - a standard uniquely suited for testing poorly soluble surfactants but not specified in the regulation - is equivalent to already specified methods. See Scher opinion, and Cesio.
