British MPs urge action on business eco-crime
A UK parliamentary committee has called for tougher action to curb corporate environmental crimes. The MPs recommended creating a new civil penalty regime, plus a requirement for all regulated businesses to assess their compliance with legislation annually. The Anglo-Welsh environment agency should be given more resources to manage these new systems, the committee added. It noted that smaller firms (SMEs) are responsible for 80% of all pollution incidents in England and Wales, and complained that too few such incidents are currently detected or punished.
