UN agencies compare notes on ship scrapping
Three UN agencies kicked off a programme to align their goals and work programmes on management of ship scrapping at a meeting in London last week. The International maritime organisation, International labour organisation and the Basel convention on international hazardous waste trade and began a systematic comparison of the guidelines each has produced. They also agreed to ensure that abandonment of ships is adequately covered in a future international legally binding instrument on ship scrapping. Basel convention parties agreed last year to start drafting such an instrument (EED 04/11/04). See joint press release.
