EU states in move to bring nature "back to Life"
A "large majority" of member states wants to restore nature protection to the EU's reworked Life+ funding programme, plans from the council of ministers reveal. Most delegations want to add explicit references to EU wildlife conservation legislation in Life+, which will fund environmental projects from 2007 to 2013. No increase in its seven-year €2.19bn budget is proposed. The European Commission wants to remove nature protection from Life+ and instead finance the EU's Natura 2000 programme through rural development funds (EED 30/11/04). See council document.
