EU becomes party to green democracy convention
The European Commission has ratified the UN Aarhus convention on public access to environmental justice and information on behalf of the EU. The move is likely to upset green groups, who earlier called on the EU executive to delay ratification until it had cleared up doubts about access to justice relating to decisions by the EU institutions (EED 16/02/05). Austria and the UK have also ratified the convention at a national level in recent weeks. As a result, all but six EU countries are now full convention parties. See Unece press release and Aarhus website.
