Commission mulls new EU maritime policy
The European Commission announced on Wednesday preparations for a wide-reaching new EU maritime policy to cover fields ranging from resource use, fishing, transport and tourism. NGO Greenpeace warned that the plan might duplicate, and perhaps sideline, a marine environment strategy due from the Commission this summer (EED 15/11/04). But fisheries commissioner Joe Borg's office said that the marine environment strategy would be "a very important component" of any future maritime policy: "The last thing we want is duplication or competing policies".
