American cloud lifts for UK ship recycler
British ship recycling firm Able UK has welcomed an American court ruling clearing the way for a further nine defunct naval vessels to be towed across the Atlantic for dismantling. The company sparked a huge political row in 2003 when it imported four ships, leading to two court orders to reapply for planning permission and a waste handling licence (EED 16/12/03). Meanwhile, US environmentalists took legal action - now rebuffed - to prevent any more vessels being sent abroad by the American maritime administration (Marad). See Able UK press release, and Marad.
