Commission consults on aviation and climate
The European Commission on Friday launched an eight-week consultation on how to tackle rising climate change impacts of aviation. The results will feed into a strategy due this summer, focusing on possible use of economic instruments. The leading contender is to bring aircraft emissions into the EU industrial greenhouse gas emission trading scheme (EED 21/01/05). The consultation canvasses opinion on this plus other options including aircraft fuel taxes, VAT on air transport, departure/arrival taxes, en-route charges or taxes on emissions.
