Sustainable consumption "must be open to all"
A conference hosted by EU advisory body the Economic and social council this week sounded warning bells over splitting Europe into sustainability haves and have-nots. Luxembourg economy minister Jeannot Krecké said European society would find itself divided along new lines if "green" products do not become affordable for everyone. EESC president Anne-Marie Sigmund said sustainable products and services must not become associated with luxury. EU consumer commissioner Markos Kyprianou stressed that the current challenge was to make environmentally sound products available and understandable to citizens. See press release.
