Germany to scrap illegal waste export fees
The German government has proposed legislation to scrap a federal fee on waste exports. The move comes two years after Germany was condemned by the European court of justice over the issue. Known as the solidarity fund, the fee was introduced in 1994. The revenue it raises is used to pay the costs of repatriating wastes found to have been exported illegally where the exporter cannot be held accountable. The European court of justice ruled the fee to be an illegal customs duty (EED 27/02/03). See press release.
