Norway to ban biodegradable waste dumping
The Norwegian government is to accept proposals for a total ban on biodegradable waste dumping by 2009. The ban goes far beyond EU policy on progressively reducing the practice. In parallel, a recycling target for all types of waste - currently 75% by 2010 is to be increased to 80% by 2009. Additional measures announced in a white paper published on Friday include stricter controls on the shipping and fisheries sectors, which account for about 40% of Norway's atmospheric emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx).
