Revised EU pesticide residue rules in force
A regulation overhauling EU rules on maximum residue levels (MRLs) of pesticides in food and animal feed will enter into force on 5 April after being published in the bloc's official journal. Under the regulation, nationally set MRLs will be progressively harmonised at European. This should reduce legal complexity and eliminate obstacles to trade. The European food safety authority will have a lead role in proposing EU-wide MRLs. The regulation was proposed by the European Commission two years ago (EED 17/03/03) and finalised last December (EED 16/12/04). See the regulation, (396/2005/EC).
