Nuclear power "gaining stature"
A new nuclear energy dawn could be around the corner, according to a meeting of ministers and experts hosted by the International atomic energy agency (IAEA) and the OECD. IAEA chief Mohamed ElBaradei said nuclear energy was "regaining stature as a serious option", whilst Italian industry minister Antonio Marzano noted a lessening of public hostility. A statement adopted after the meeting stresses that nuclear power "does not generate air pollution or greenhouse gas emissions". It recognises however that public concerns over reactor safety and radioactive waste remain to be overcome. See conference statement.
