Denmark wins more time on nitrate application
Denmark has gained EU approval to continue allowing certain farms to apply livestock manure containing nitrogen above a 170 kg per hectare limit imposed by the bloc's 1991 nitrates directive. A Commission decision continues a derogation first granted in 2002 from its expiry last summer until 31 July 2008. Denmark cut nitrate leaching by 48% between 1985 and 2003 and is aiming for a further 13% reduction by 2015, the decision notes. It also has programmes to ensure nitrates in groundwater stay within the EU limit of 50 milligrams per litre. See decision.
