Italian sea transport aid wins green light
Italy has won EU state aid approval to grant €240m over three years in environmentally motivated subsidies for haulage companies to move freight from roads to sea routes. Several member states offer subsidies to take freight off roads, almost all to railways rather than shipping. The latest Italian aid is far larger in scale than the average. The EU promotes transfers to short sea shipping in its transport policy white paper, and under the 2003-6 Marco Polo funding programme (EED 29/09/04). See press release.
