Major EU funds "can benefit environment"
The billions of euros of EU funding allocated to cohesion, rural development and fisheries in the bloc's next budget period can and should be used to support environmental goals, green group WWF says in a new handbook. The programmes are expected to be worth €425bn between 2007 and 2013, far greater than the €2bn Life environment fund. The handbook explores ways that authorities and others could make this funding support four key environmental goals: nature protection (Natura 2000), water management (the water framework directive), energy (efficiency and renewables) and sustainable transport. See handbook.
