Finnish study backs newspaper recycling
A life-cycle assessment (LCA) also considering cost aspects of options for managing old newspapers in the Helsinki area has concluded that recycling is preferable to either landfill disposal or energy recovery. The study, by the Finnish environment institute and Helsinki university, was carried out in response to suggestions that energy recovery might be a better option than recycling. It found that replacing coal burning by using newspapers as fuel was the best option in purely environmental terms, but that it was not financially viable. See press release and the study.
