International air pollution rules take effect
Two new UN air pollution protocols have entered force this week. Annex VI to the Marpol marine pollution convention took effect on Thursday, bringing with it a series of environmental restrictions on shipping. Eight EU member states are among countries to have ratified so far. On Tuesday the pan-European Gothenburg air pollution protocol became binding (EED 04/03/05). The measure sets national ceilings on emissions of SOx, NOx, NH3 and VOCs from industry, transport and agriculture.
