UK pressed to legislate for annual carbon cuts
Friends of the Earth has urged the UK government to pass a law imposing legally binding 3% annual reductions in national carbon dioxide emissions. An opinion poll commissioned by the group shows that 73% of the public believe the government is doing too little to tackle climate change. Though Britain has cut its overall contribution to global warming since 1990 carbon dioxide has risen since 1997, the group complained. It claims that substantial cuts can be made in power, transport and other sectors without resorting to nuclear power. See press release.
