Spanish tyre makers gear up for EU landfill ban
Five tyre manufacturers controlling 90% of the Spanish market have announced the creation of a new company, Signus Ecovalor, to manage the recovery of used tyres. The new venture has been created to prepare the industry for a ban on the landfilling of shredded tyres which is due to take effect from July 2006 under the EU's 1999 landfill directive. The landfilling of whole tyres was banned two years ago (EED 16/07/03). According to recycling industry trade association BIR Spain recovered only 40% of its used tyres in 2003. See press release.
