Norway crows over 90% Weee collection rate

Norwegians are "the best in the world" at collecting electrical and electronic waste, the national pollution control authority (SFT) claimed on Monday. Last year, over 90% of waste electrical and electronic equipment (Weee) was collected and reprocessed, it said. A spokesman added that the collection rate equated to 12.2kg per capita. The EU's Weee directive requires 4kg per capita from 2006. "In addition there is collection of industrial waste, which is not included in the Weee directive," he said. Previous "unofficial world record" holder is Nordic neighbour Sweden (EED 01/10/02). See press release.
