Tunnel fire reignites Alpine transport tensions
A fatal lorry fire in the Fréjus Alpine road tunnel on Saturday has sparked renewed calls for more sustainable transport in the region. The accident "reminds us of the urgency of rebalancing road and rail", EU transport commissioner Jacques Barrot said on Tuesday. Environmentalists also called for a shift to rail transport, complaining that the Fréjus' closure was diverting heavy traffic through the Mont Blanc tunnel. Hauliers association IRU instead demanded a switch to twin-tube road tunnels. See press releases from European Commission and IRU, plus Mont Blanc green groups ARSMB and CPVH.
