Expansion for Irish farm waste recycling scheme
Irish environment minister Dick Roche last week announced plans to expand a national recycling scheme for agricultural plastics to other farm wastes. Mr Roche cited what he called Europe's "first and most successful" farm plastics recycling programme as a good example of producer responsibility in action. Over 43,000 tonnes of silage sheeting and bale wrap had been recycled since its launch in 1997, including 9,000 tonnes in 2004, he said. The minister announced plans to extend the scheme to cover other farm wastes including fertiliser bags and used chemical containers. See press release.
