"Strong Reach" urged to protect breast milk

Human breast milk contains traces of over 300 synthetic chemicals, some linked with birth defects, German environmental group Bund warned on Tuesday in a new study. The findings demonstrate the need for the EU's Reach chemicals policy to to be strong and precautionary, the NGO said. It urged the German government, currently negotiating the regulation with EU partners, to reject any weakening. Bund's study showed falling levels in breast milk of PCB, DDT and dioxins but rising levels of other substances like fabric conditioners, flame retardants and perfumes. See press release and study.
