Particle pollution "a tough challenge" for UK
A British expert group has warned that future targets for fine particle (PM) pollution will not be met without further action. But the panel said that clear policies would be difficult to set immediately because of a "wholly unsatisfactory" level of monitoring of key components of particle fractions like PM10. In a report, it recommends more monitoring, and greater attention to emissions of precursors to secondary PM. It urges more attention to background levels of PM rather than just urban hotspots, and additional forms of regulation to reduce average population exposure. See report.
