German industry promises SF6 emission cuts
German power generators and major users have extended a voluntary commitment on limiting emissions of the greenhouse gas sulphur hexafluoride (SF6). In addition to electrical switchgear, the signatories have now committed to cut life-cycle emissions in all power supply applications over 1000V. The announcement comes after the German government agreed not to pursue earlier plans to ban SF6 (EED 30/09/02). An industry representative said the government saw the commitment as a "useful supplement" to draft EU legislation covering fluorinated greenhouse gases, including SF6.
