EU ministers under pressure over deca-BDE
EU environment ministers are being subjected to intense lobbying over brominated flame retardant deca-BDE in the run-up to Friday's environment council. Eight European environmental groups and a group of 18 American legislators have written separate letters demanding that ministers come out against exempting deca-BDE from a forthcoming EU ban on toxics in electronics. Six of the ministers themselves already publicly support prohibition (EED 17/06/05). This week the European parliament's environment committee also called for the proposed exemption to be ditched (EED 21/06/05). See US letter, NGOs' letter, and bromine industry counter-arguments.
