Sweden puts back lead ammunition ban
Sweden has postponed until 2008 a total ban on lead in ammunition originally scheduled for next year. "Our ambitions to phase out lead... stand fast [but] we are putting off the ban because it is taking longer than expected to find suitable alternatives", environment minister Lena Sommestad said in a statement on Thursday. The national chemicals inspectorate (KemI) and environmental protection authority (EPA) are to compile a comprehensive report on the issue, including the likely effect of the ban on sports shooting and hunting. A possible rescheduling was mooted when the phase-out was announced four years ago (EED 02/0701). See press release.
